This is the first time we have been in Yendi for the presidential elections. The election was on the 7th; they just announced the winner last night. Many people are disgruntled about the old president getting the victory again. Many of those unhappy people have decided to protest; of course the losers say that the victor “stole” the presidency and that they need to have 2 presidents. Last night when they announced the winner there were reports of gunfire in Accra in protest.
We went to town late this afternoon to get diesel, buy some cups for the monthly class and to buy some bread. We always try to buy from an older lady that is near the mission house. As we were getting near to her shop we noticed a lot of congestion in the road. A young man ran up to the truck and shouted, “Close your windows! Close your windows!” As we got closer we saw lots of motorcycles lying in the road. There were probably 8 or 10 motorcycles on their side in the road. At first we thought that there had been an accident but there were no people standing in the road. Then we saw a teenage boy pushing a bicycle. He dashed into the road and threw his bicycle in the road. There was also a motor king in the road. Steve started to stop to buy bread but the bread lady shouted for him to keep going and not to stop. It was very strange. We drove on to the mission house. Steve called Mr. Oldman our neighbor; he said he was going to call around and find out what was going on. We figure it was some sort of protest.
We spent the first part of the afternoon making copies of the church documents and reports and the second part we spent making payroll. We gave the money to Mr. Iddrisu to count and divide into everyone’s pay packets. If he counted everything correctly he would have come up with zero left over. When he finished he had more than 1,000 cedis left. We had to recount all the pay packets. Needless to say he ended up staying late but we found all the mistakes. We usually make up the pay packets for each month we will be gone and leave them in the safe but since the robbery we are not comfortable leaving that much money at the mission house.
We really appreciate everything you do for us and for the work. Without your help the work could not go on.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
