Word is getting out that I will buy / exchange new aluminum pots of old enamel pots. This morning when we went to Zorash’s house to buy peanut oil from her neighbor one of the old ladies said she had a two handled pots she was willing to sell; we bought the pot and found out that she had the full set of three pots in various sizes. She wanted to sell them all and I wanted to buy them all. Then when we went back to the house where we found the enamel bucket with lid to check to see if our diaper rash ointment containers had come in one of the neighbors had a bucket she wanted to trade for a big silver pan; she said that she had washed the bucket and was waiting on us to return so she could make a deal too. These pots are part of the ladies dowry. The lady that had sold us the set of 3 told us that she got them around the time that her first son was born. We met her son but he was not sure how old he was but he guessed his age to be 50 or 60. A man can finish buying the dowry items at any point during the marriage if the family will allow it. Steve said that these pots were part of my dowry; I guess we are now officially married! Ha!
Zorash came today to make up days she was off earlier in the week. We went to the market and bought ginger, onions and hot pepper. She helped me make Shito (hot pepper sauce). We also bought some fermented cassava flour to go with the fermented cornmeal dough that I had bought earlier. I wanted her to show me how to make Banku (fermented corn dough ball). We did not use all the cassava flour so I sent it home with her. She said that I could keep it in the refrigerator; I told her that I was giving it to her because I had no intention of making Banku by myself! It was very long process that took too much time standing over the stove stirring! I will just occasionally buy my Banku! We planned on cooking the Banku for lunch but it took so long to buy the ingredients and cook the stuff that it was 4:00 before we got to eat. We are not sure if it was very delicious or we were very hungry.
Steve spent the afternoon working on his lessons for the upcoming seminar while he waited on his lunch.
Zorash’s dog got into her rabbits and killed the mother; then during the night the dog kept worrying the baby rabbits. She decided that she was going to have to get rid of the dog. Zorash’s tribe does not eat dogs but Tichak the watchman eats dog. Tichak went over this morning to check to see how big the dog was; he offered Zorash 50 Cedis (10 dollars) for the dog but she is holding out for a little more money. She needs to sell it quickly before it has a chance to kill more rabbits.
Take care and have a great day!
