This morning while we were cutting trees that were hanging over on the outside of the fence a man came up to Steve and told him that he was growing “organic” vegetables and he wanted to know if Steve wanted to buy some.  We doubt that the man really knows what constitutes an “organic” vegetable but we were interested because the man was growing fresh vegetables. This is rare in our area.  He said that his farm was not very far away.  We were tired of cutting wood and needed a break so we loaded the man and his wife in the van and went to see his farm.  We found out that the man had just been discharged from the hospital and naturally we wondered what was wrong with him but thought it would be rude to ask.  Besides the doctors probably did not tell him what his problem was.  His farm was more like a garden than a farm but it was not too far from the mission house.  He had a lovely crop of cabbages that were not ready to harvest.  He did have fresh loose leaf lettuce which we bought and he had a few cucumber vines.  We are not fond of cucumbers but at this point we felt like we needed to buy something.  His wife hunted around and found a couple handfuls of green beans which ended up being enough for 1 meal for us.  He is going to let us know when the cabbage is ready to eat.  He also had some carrots that were not ready to harvest.  Maybe they will be ready when the cabbage is ready.

After we got back to the mission house we started cutting trees again.  We noticed that our neighbor had a tree that had been cut down.  All the smaller branches had been cut off leaving the tree trunk.  This neighbor is a widow and we knew she did not have the means of cutting it up nor the money to hire someone to cut it.  We thought it would be a kind gesture to cut it into manageable pieces for her.  Nazo, the day man went over and asked her if she wanted it cut up.  She was thrilled to death to get it cut up.  Steve cut it into rings that she could easily lift.  She has already stacked the wood against the house to prevent someone from coming along and getting it.  She will hack it up with an axe and make firewood from it.

Gomda, the mechanic is going to try and to get new headlights housings for the green truck.  It has been years since we have been able to adjust the headlights.  Of course they will not really be new; they will be used from a junk yard.  The Ghanaians don’t called used stuff “used”, they call them it “home-use”.  So Gomda is going to try and get home-use headlight housings for the green truck.   He has to order them from Kumasi.

Take care and have a great day!

In His Service,

Steve and Kandie
