When Timothy arrived this morning he said he thought we were supposed to go to his family’s village Jagrido today until it dawned on him we were going to Jakpumba, a village off of the Bimbilla Road. It really didn’t slow us down any because the road condition is so much better now going south of Yendi. When we arrived in the village we found out the church leader forgot to remind the Church we were coming today. The chief was at his house so we drove down a few hundred yards to greet him and give kola.
The members were a little slow getting to the building but we enjoyed a great visit with the fifty-six in attendance including children. I chose to speak about fornication using the account of Shechem and Dinah, the daughter of Leah and Jacob found in Genesis chapter 34. This account has many similarities to the marriage practices used here in northern Ghana. The family of the girls want to see which suitor will bring more money to the table for their daughter and/or sister. This method produces a lot of illegitimate children that need to be cared for. Of course this subject provided a lot of questions for the question and answer period after services. One lady brought up the question of men not giving the wives money for necessary items like food. The man will say he doesn’t have any money for food and will continue to say so until the wife insists it is necessary. It is the exception to the rule here to find a man who will treat his wife as an equal.
There was a lot of noise coming from the building before we left. I stuck my head in to find one of the men was passing out the crocheted hats to the woman and children. They were having a big time finding the right hat for their child. The Church gave us 10 yams as a going away gift. That’s a big gift considering two-three yams cost about 10 Cedis! We re-gifted the yams to Timothy when we arrived back at the compound.
Tonight at bible class at Kulkpeni the young men who attend requested that Timothy and I teach some classes on certain topics at the Sunday evening class. The first topic is on marriage so we will see how it all goes this next Sunday night.
That is about it for today. Hope you had a good Lord’s Day. May God bless!
In His service,
