Yendi Notes
We started making our way home to the Alabama today. We flew down to Accra this evening. We drove to Tamale to fly out. Red was not able to drive us to Tamale because he was in Sunyani for the funeral of his aunt. We thought we were going to have to leave the van with our Indian friends that run a hotel in Tamale so it would be safe but the way things worked out we were able to meet up with Red at the bus station. Red drove us to the airport and then drove the van back to Yendi. It was a win- win situation. We did not have to impose on our friends and Red did not have to ride on public transportation back to Yendi.
Please pray that there will be peace in Yendi. The president and a delegation have set up a “Road Map” for the 2 dominant tribes as they perform the funerals of their late kings. We are happy that we are not going to be around during the process because it has the potential for turning into a war. The government has already started sending in “peace keeping forces.” The armored vehicles have been rolling around the streets of Yendi. The president had a news conference on the television a couple nights ago and pleaded with the people of Dagbon to peacefully follow the “Road Map.” The goal is to finish the funerals and enskin new kings. The kings in Dagbon do not sit on thrones like the kings in England and they do not sit on stools like the kings in the southern part of Ghana so they are not enthroned or enstooled rather they are enskinned because they actually sit on animal skins. It you are a very important chief you will sit on a lion skin plus cow skins; a lesser chief might sit on a leopard skin along with cow skins; other chiefs will sit on antelope and cow skins; even the smallest chiefs sit on cow skins. It has been 17 years since the king was murdered and it is time to have a new king. Our leave this year has come at the perfect time.
We came to Accra a day early so I could do some shopping. We work hard and we play hard!
Thank you for all you do for us. Keep us in your prayers as we travel.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
