Yendi Notes
Dawda, the mason finished the garage doors today. He had to re-plaster the old pillars and plaster the new one. It is amazing how well the plaster looks for a patch job. When they were doing the demolition work they damaged the apron going into the garage. Dawda assured me that he would fix it. Yesterday he told me that he was going to make a “up and down” to go in the garage. In other words he was going to make sort of a speed ramp that the vehicles have to jump over. I told him we did not want an “up and down”; we just wanted a small “up” going into the garage. He said he understood and he knew how to make it. Well, this afternoon when they called us out to see the finished job he had made an “up and down” that was so tall that neither of the vans could get in the garage. Both of them have a luggage rack on the top which makes them even taller. We got the tape measure and showed him the problem. Fortunately the cement was still soft enough to be scraped off. They threw the damp cement into the yard for the vehicles to drive over as they go into the garage. I do not think the cement he threw in the yard will ever do anything except break apart. At least that job is done.
Mr. Oldman, our neighbor, is out in the yard talking to Steve. He just stopped by for a visit; we were happy to see him. He used to run a bicycle shop so he has connections with vendors that sell bicycle stuff. It is past time for Steve to give the evangelists and church leaders new tires and tubes for their bicycles; Mr. Oldman is going to order them for us from Tamale. He said they should be here tomorrow. We are not in that much of a hurry for them but we will pack them in the storage shed until class time.
Red stopped by today too. He has pre-made cement blocks that he wants to sell. We are considering buying them. Red found someone that can haul them; not only will they haul them in their motor king but they will load and unload them. Sounds like a good plan!
The toilet project is coming along nicely. They have built both of the cement toilet houses and have dug the pits for the septic tank. Mr. Iddrisu said they were not able to dig as deep as they wanted to because the water started seeping up through the ground. If I had been Mr. Iddrisu I would have abandoned the toilet pit and dug a well! Ha!
Papa Zachariah stopped by this afternoon too. We asked him if he had an outdoor toilet at his house. He said he did not; they just went to the bush. We asked if he would like us to build him one. He was all smiles. We told him we would start on his next.
Thank you for all you do for us and for the work.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
