We got a heavy rain this evening; we could see it coming. Sometimes when we get these early rains we get a wind / dust storm before the rain comes. The sky was a weird color because of all the dust that was coming with the storm. The wind was terrible; we feel certain that it took off the roofs of some of the houses. It sounded like part of our roof was coming off; we checked and everything is fine. I guess it was tree branches and mangos hitting the roof. Steve was at the Child Center when the worst of the wind and dust came. He was working on the door lock. It was so dusty that I could not see the Child Center because the dust was so thick. We were happy to get the rain; the cistern is about 1/3 of the way full.
This morning we went to town and bought a small freezer and more rice, beans and corn. We will have the corn ground into cornmeal. We bought the freezer so that we could store the grains without the bugs eating them up. We are not sure how long we are going to be here so we wanted to be prepared in case we can’t get out a few months.
Mr. Iddrisu and Nazo started painting the storage room at the Child Center this morning. This is the room that we pulled the carpet out of a couple days ago. We want to paint the floor with oil paint but none of the hardware stores have turpentine. We will have to use gasoline to do the clean up. Maybe we will just throw the brushes away after we use them.
There are rumors that someone in the Northern Region has gotten the virus but we have not been able to confirm it. Steve called Dr. Owusu at the Yendi Hospital and asked if he had heard about the case. He said he had heard it but he did not know if it was true or just a rumor. Steve also asked him if Yendi Hospital had gotten any test kits yet; he said we did not have them yet.
This afternoon we stopped to talk to Shaibu Adams and see if he could get us some Chloroquine tablets. He said he was going to Accra next week and he would check for us. We told him that they were using Chloroquine with some success in treating the Corona virus. He said that he could treat it locally. He said that the virus could not live in temperatures over 52 degrees Celsius. He said that the leaves and bark of the Nim tree will kill malaria. He said that what you do is boil the Nim; wrap your head and face and breathe in the steam from the Nim concoction and it would kill the virus. And then there is that; quite the home remedy! I wonder what that would do to your fever.
Take care and stay away from the virus.
