Yendi Notes
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you enjoyed a wonderful day with family and friends and did not eat too much! If your Thanksgiving is tomorrow; enjoy! We had our Thanksgiving before we came back to Ghana which we enjoyed immensely!
Today is our oldest son Aaron’s birthday. Every once in a while his birthday falls on Thanksgiving Day. He was actually born on Thanksgiving Day 39 years ago. Missing birthdays and special days is one of the things we miss most about being in Ghana. We will celebrate when we get home. I have often thought we should have a once a year birthday celebration to celebrate the whole family’s birthday at one time! Sort of like Christmas when everyone gets a present.
This morning we had the “big give away.” Earlier this year when the roof was off the house and everything was such a mess we had to go through everything. Things had been collecting around here for 20 years. We really needed to have a yard sale but yard sales are unheard of over here so we came up with the “big give away.” We gathered up all the worn sheets, used curtains, mismatched pots and pans, plastic containers, shoes, clothing and all the building supplies that were left from the roofing project and set them around on the veranda. It looked like a yard sale. We clustered all the like items together. After the Child Center closed we gathered all the workers around had them each draw a number out of a bowl to see who would go first and began giving things away. One of the first things we gave away was old luggage. We told them that they could use the luggage to pack their treasures in to make it easier to take them home. I set up a chart so number one did not always go first. The workers had the best time; it was like Christmas. Most of the stuff was things that we could not or were not using but they thought it was grand! They did some trading amongst themselves. We told them there were only 2 rules to the game; they had to take it home today and they could not bring it back for a refund or exchange. After everything was distributed we loaded their stuff in the truck and the motorking and took it home for them.
This afternoon we went to town and bought the paint, brushes, brooms and additional supplies they will need while we are on leave. We bought oil paint and painted the floor in the guest bed room in the apartment. This is the room we removed the carpet from a few weeks ago. It looks very nice but the smell gives me a headache.
Thank you for all you do for us and for the work.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
