For the 3rd consecutive week, we traveled the same roads to visit the Church located at Sobitido. We drove by the congregation located at Jegrido, then on through Nalongni , and finally we arrived at Sobitido. I did have to take the red pickup this morning instead of the green pickup. Gomda didn’t bring the pickup to the house until midafternoon.
It was cloudy again so when we arrived at the church building there were just a few people milling around so we walked over to the chief’s house to say Hi and let him know what we were doing in the village. There were groundnuts(peanuts) laying around everywhere. The chief said he had planted 10 acres of groundnuts and you could see he had a bumper crop this year. While we were visiting with the chief, one of the ladies in the compound brought us a bowl of fresh groundnuts as a gift. That was so sweet of them and I love the boiled peanuts we get over here.
The little church building was packed. The women and girls far outnumbered the men present. The members were very happy to get the supplies we gave to the Church. Kandie has been trying to collect as many old wife’s tales about things that pregnant women are not to do. After the question and answers period as we were walking out of the building Kandie asked several of the older women if they knew of any activities that pregnant women are not supposed to engage in. One sister said they say you shouldn’t carry any rocks because rocks can be evil and it will transfer over to the baby. That was a new one for us! I wonder how that idea got started? Hmm!
Before we left the village, we visited the old chief that we have known for years. He is an invalid. He is also blind but he did say a few words to us. We left some money so if he needed any medicine the family could buy it for him.
One man hitched a ride back to Yendi with us. He was traveling to Tamale but he had to come back to Yendi to catch a lorry. Shortly after we got back to the house Timothy called and said the masons were finishing up the new building. There were several problems; two of the windows were not hung correctly and a door was scraping the veranda floor so much it wouldn’t open all the way. We sent the money to Timothy to finish paying the mason but we told him the money had to be withheld until our friend Red could look at the windows to make sure he could fix them as the frames were already set in concrete and reworking them would do a lot of damage to the plastered walls. Red said he could fix the windows so he is going out tomorrow to do that.
It was dark when we arrived at Kulkpeni tonight but Kandie and I walked over to look at the building with our flashlights. From what I could see it looked very nice! We are glad to have that job done. In a couple of weeks, we will start on the wall.
Hope you had a nice day! May God bless!
