It was very hot today; the high temperature was 111 degrees and the heat index was 148 degrees. Sometimes when it gets this hot the storm clouds build up and we get a rain but we are at the end of the wet season so we are not sure if we will get any more rain. Only God knows for sure.
First thing this morning we went to town to buy some phone units and to look for mosquito netting. Steve has used all we had on hand and there are still several windows on the main mission house that need to be replaced. We went to 4 places before we found what we were looking for. We wanted the plastic screening because it is easier to work with. The problem is that it comes in colors. Today our choices were yellow, green, black or blue. We wanted the blue because it is easier to look through. The first 2 places we stopped only had yellow and green, the next place only had black. I had resigned myself to taking green if we could not find the blue. When we finally found the blue we bought plenty.
Nazo was only here for a little while this morning because the tractor with the corn sheller was coming to shell the corn in the back field today. No farmer here owns their own tractor or farm equipment. The men that own the equipment go around from field to field hiring themselves and their equipment to the farmers. Sometimes they get paid in money; other times they get a certain amount of whatever is being harvested. Nazo said that the corn did well enough this year that he will not have to buy corn and he will have enough to last until next harvest. Corn is a staple for most Ghanaians especially those in our area. They will eat ground corn in some form or fashion every day, sometimes twice a day. If they fermented corn porridge for breakfast they could have corn 3 times a day. The corn is ground and cooked like stiff cornmeal mush; it is eaten with a variety of soups and stews.
The compound has been quiet today; we have not had any visitors, which is very unusual but I have to say it has been very enjoyable. I actually got to sit at the computer and do some “for fun” writing.
We still have not started making the copies of all the important papers and documents; I am putting that job off. I think that would be a good job for a lazy Sunday afternoon or Monday afternoon or Tuesday…
Our sympathies go out to the Roger Jackson family. I know Roger will be missed.
Thanks for the love, prayers and support.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
