We are back in Tamale. Steve had a meeting he needed to attend this morning with the District Assembly so we did not leave the mission house until 1:00pm. We stopped in Yendi and bought some fried yams and hot sauce from a street vendor. They were hot and delicious. As soon as we got to Tamale we went to see the auditor. He was not in his office. On Monday when we saw him he told us that the clerks that work in his office were out on vacation. I guess he decided to take a small vacation too. We called him and he said that we could not proceed until he bought some forms and filled them out. We have an appointment to go to his office next Thursday. Nothing moves fast in Ghana.
Our next stop was the bank. The bank officer accepted the paper work and documents. We are hopeful that will be all they need. The bank officer was not quite sure if they would accept everything. The main problem was with Divine’s paper work. Divine lives in a village that does not have electricity and the houses have never been assigned house numbers; the bank wants proof of residency which they can get off of a utility bill. None of Divine’s other documents have his address on them. The bank officer said he would call us if any of the documents were rejected. Please!
We did a little grocery shopping. When we got to Melcom’s (sort of like a department store) the workers were unpacking Indian spices and food! I had a hay day! I wanted to buy one of everything but restrained myself to buying only one of every other thing! Ha!
We stopped at one of the gas stations that also sell groceries and we found Honey Nut Cheerios which are Steve’s favorite type cereal. He was excited! There is no fresh milk in Ghana except that which is sold by the Falani (nomadic herdsmen) which is not particularly safe to drink. If we want milk we can buy eradiated boxed milk that can stay on the shelf for years, canned evaporated milk or powder milk. Steve prefers the boxed milk.
We stopped by the Bible Society shop and bought a case of English Bibles. We were disappointed when we found out the price had gone up by 1/3. The Bibles were very nice. These had thumb tabs to make it easier to find the books.
We just finished eating supper at the hotel. The owners are Indians and the food is always good and spicy.
Have a great day!
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
