Steve was gone for the bulk of the day. The last Friday of the month is the busiest day of the month because that is the day the evangelists and church leaders come in for the monthly class. He did not get back to the compound until around 2:00 but he was not finished; he came back to get Bibles and Borido’s sign board. He had to take the sign board to the bus station to be taken to the village. He also took several men to various bus stations to get rides to go back home.
Before Steve left the mission house this morning we had several visitors. A couple of men came from the Nakpa church to buy communion juice. They did not speak English so Steve had to call Timothy to find out what they needed. Donkey and Mr. Iddrisu were here but they do not speak the Konkomba language.
The second set of visitors included Papa Zachariah, the old watchman that got promoted to the position of a chief a few years back. He came with his linguist. It was good to see him again. We thought that he had just come to greet us but he really came to discuss a problem that Mr. Iddrisu was having. Papa Zachariah is related to Mr. Iddrisu; I think they are cousins but Mr. Iddrisu is years and years younger. In fact when Mr. Iddrisu’s father died he went to live with Papa Zachariah. As we were visiting we found out that he started working for my parents, Royce and Cindy Reynolds, in 1997. I guess he was their first night watchman. His new position seems to be agreeing with him; he looked good for an old guy. He does not know how old he is but many of the people here have no idea how old they are; that must be nice, just pick an age, any age and go with it!
I spent part of the morning working on the payroll. Steve started working on it before the guest started arriving; I finished it when he was gone to class. While I was sitting at the desk I decided to get a head start on entering the receipts for April.
While Steve was in town delivering the signboard the green truck overheated; he checked the oil and it was fine. The truck would not start and it was too hot to open the radiator. He locked the truck and hailed a yellow yellow to bring him back to the mission house.
I intended for us to have an early supper but by the time we took care of everything it was actually supper time.
After supper we jumped in the old van with a jerry can of water and headed to town to see if the truck had cooled down enough to start. We called Gomda the mechanic; he was at his house. We stopped and picked him up on the way. The radiator was dry; the radiator had a serious leak around the top rim. We were happy when the truck started on the first try. Gomda said that the engine sounded normal but that he would need to put on a new head gasket. He drove the truck to the shop and we took Gomda back to his house. He is going to work on it tomorrow.
Please keep the evangelists and church leaders in your prayers.

The Monkeyshines
I found a new toy! Well, it is not really a toy but it is fun to play with anyway! It is a rubber glove! Have you ever played with a rubber glove? These were particularly hot because Mom had been using them to grind hot peppers! It was good for me; the pepper helped clear out my sinuses! I played and played with one and then Mom took the game to the next level; she blew the glove up and tied a knot in it! And if that was not wonderful enough she blew up the other glove! Then I got confused! I could not hold both rubber gloves at the same time; I would grab one and the other one would fall down. I finally got them both and rolled around on the ground with them attacking one and then the other one!
Yesterday I found an uncut papaya (papaw) . I could not help but take a bite out of it. I kept eating it bit by bit until I had a hole to the center of the papaw. The center is filled with small hard black seeds that are in a sack of water. The seeds are about the size of a black pepper corn. The hole was big enough that I could put my hand in and get the seeds. I tried to eat the seeds but they were not very filling. Mom just let me play with the papaw because she said that she would cut it later. This morning when Mom was fixing me a plate of fruit she could not find the papaw anywhere! She thought she had lost her mind; she took everything off the shelves in both refrigerators; she cleaned off the kitchen counter and she washed the dishes. Really did she really think she would find that papaw in the sink? Finally she looked under the couch and there it was; no worse for the wear but a little dusty! I ate the papaw before I ate the other fruit she cut up.
I know how you can recycle rubber gloves!
Love, Skeeter
