Kandie wanted to get some laundry done before we left for worship so we scurried around until it was time for us to go. Then Mr. Iddrisu came by needing an advance so he could hire a tractor to bring his corn from Kpamang. We were running a little late but it didn’t take us long to get to Timothy Niligrini’s house. We had been invited to Yowando for worship and then a naming ceremony after services. Timothy asked if he could take a bag of fertilizer to his brother Daniel’s house at Jagrido so he loaded it in the pickup. The fertilizer will be used as a side dressing for corn. The distance between Yowando and Jagrido is less than a mile the way the crow flies so it gave us a chance to greet some of the men of the Jagrido Church before going on to Yowando.
We arrived at the church building before the services started. Timothy and I had decided on the way that I would preach on fornication. The reason being the culture permits the girl’s family to allow men to fornicate with their daughter to decide who has more money to bring to the family by the marriage. These ways have been propagated by the pagans. Of course the females usually are the ones that get the short end of the stick when it comes to the marriage customs.
After services there was a question asked “Can a member of the Church marry a non-Christian or a member of a denomination?” Our reply was to marry someone that would help you to go to heaven and be as compatible as possible so there would be peace in the house.
The naming ceremony only took a few minutes. The young couple asked me to name their little boy. The little guy was wearing a green, gold, and red knitted hat and swaddled up with a white baby blanket. He was a cute little guy; I am partial to young babies. The father’s name is Elijah so I chose the name of “Elisha” for the child. Kandie took several pictures of the baby and the church members.
Before leaving the village we did our traditional walk to the chief’s house to greet and give kola.
Later in the afternoon Timothy came to the house per Kandie’s invitation to do some sewing. Timothy is a tailor but doesn’t know as much as he would like so Kandie was giving him some instructions how to make girl’s dresses from pillowcases to sell during the New Year holidays.
It will not be long before it’s time to go for evening bible class so I will close for now. Have a great day and may God bless!
In His service,
Stephen and Kandie Taylor
