The onions were the hit of the day!  While we were in Tamale this morning we drove past a semi-truck that was loaded with 200 pound bags of onions.  They were dry red onions that the ladies love to cook with.  The owner of the truck was selling bags of onions just about as fast as the men could unload them.  There were a couple motor king vehicles waiting to be loaded.  Several motorcycles were also waiting to be loaded.  Steve turned the truck around and went back to get in line.  We wanted to buy a bag to share with the Child Center workers and the evangelists.  The bag of onions cost 220 Cedis which is about $50 dollars.  Not bad for a gift to share among 13 people.  Of course we kept some for ourselves too.  As we passed through the village of Sambu we stopped and bought some strong plastic bags so we would have something to put the onions in after we divided them.   Steve called the mission house and told the ladies that work in Child Center not to leave before we got there because we had a gift for them.  They were thrilled with the onions!  The ladies immediately started dividing them into the bags.  The stew in their stew pots will be “sweet” tonight.  (They say “sweet” when they mean savory and tasty).

Today was the first day of the monthly evangelist / church leader’s class.  Steve took the evangelists their onions.  He said they were very happy to get them.  Of course it is really a gift for their wives because men don’t cook but they will get to enjoy the onions after they are cooked.  Daniel took a couple of his onions over to Timothy’s house as a gift to Sister Rita, Timothy’s wife.  She is the one that cooks for the guys when they come in for class.  Isn’t that a sweet gesture?

As we were coming into Yendi this afternoon we noticed a truck unloading horses.  There were 5 or 6 horses that were being unloaded.  They lead the horses down to a puddle of water to get a drink.  When we got back to the mission house we asked Nazo if he knew what was going on with the horses.  He said that the family of one of the big chiefs had come to Yendi to celebrate the funeral of the chief.  He said that this chief and the Chief of Yendi were very close; they are not really family but very good friends and allies.  Nazo said that the late chief of Yendi was the one that put this chief in his position.  Nazo said that the chief died in 2006 and they are just now getting around to performing his final funeral.

Take care and have a great day!

In His Service,

Steve and Kandie
