Yendi Notes

An older mother with a set of twins came to the Child Center this morning.  This was not her first visit.  The babies had been sick and were admitted to the hospital.  Both of the babies had lost weight which is not uncommon when they have been seriously sick.  The medical assistant at the hospital sent them to the Child Center in hopes that we would put them on formula.  The problem is not that the mother does not have enough breast milk; the problem is that the babies were weak, hungry and had been given formula while they were in the hospital.  They are also finger suckers.  The mother was so worried about the babies.  We do not like to put babies on formula unless it is the last resort.  We gave the mother a hand held breast pump and showed her how to use it.  She was very successful!  We then fed the babies with a small flexible medicine cup.  They ate like it was their last meal!  Or maybe they ate like it was their first meal in a long time.  As soon as their tummies were full they fell asleep.  The mother was so relieved; as she was pumping she was wiping tears.  Later on we might have to add formula to supplement the breast milk; we hope that the babies will get strong enough to breastfeed again.

Early this afternoon we worked in the apartment.  The ladies that work with us got the floors cleaned this morning.  We hung the curtains; rearranged the furniture, made the beds and put out towels and wash clothes for our guests that will be coming on Wednesday.  Two men will be coming from the southern part of Ghana to speak at the seminar.

Later this afternoon after it cooled down we picked up Timothy and went out to the village that sells firewood.  We added some side boards to the pickup so we could pile the wood high.  Timothy and Steve had it piled higher than the cab of the truck.  On the way back to Yendi a bus driver pulled up alongside of us and gave us a thumb up sign for the way we had packed the truck!  They love to put as much stuff on a vehicle as it can possible carry.

After we unloaded the truck Steve mixed up bug spray and sprayed all the rooms the people will be using at the seminar for mosquitoes, ants and other critters.  We wanted to spray the church building but Timothy could not find the key.

Take care and thank you for your love, prayers and support.

In His Service,

Steve and Kandie
