Today was wash day! It was cloudy all day but it was not raining. We got the clothes washed and hung out early this morning so they had enough time to dry. I had hoped that it would be a sunny day because we have 600 pounds of shelled field corn that we need to finish drying before we can pack it away. Maybe tomorrow will be hot and sunny!
Steve’s first order of business this morning was to crawl under the old van to remove the flat tire. He took it straight to the vulcanizer (that is what they call the guy that patches tires); I think that is left over from the British. Ghana was a British colony; hence the reason English is the national language of Ghana.
Gomda called to let us know he had finished the green truck and the alternator was working. Yesterday when we dropped the truck at his shop I told him that the brakes were going to kill me! He did not understand what I was talking about. I told him that at times the brakes go all the way to the floor and the truck does not stop. I told him that I could pump the brakes and they would hold for a while. Steve had the same problem. When we got to the shop to pick up the truck; Gomda was standing well behind the windows and looking rather “sheepish”. I asked him if he was hiding from us. He said that he had forgotten to work on the brakes when he fixed the alternator. He drove the truck to the mission house to drop it off; he was pulling up to the gate; when he tried to stop the brake went all the way to the floor and it would not stop. He ran into the gate. At that moment he remembered the brakes that I said were going to kill me! He turned around and took the truck back to his shop to work on the brakes. He said that a valve somewhere in the line had seized up; he could not find a new one but he knew someone that had a truck that had been in an accident so he put a used one on the truck. When we got back to the house, we noticed that the gate would not close properly but we did not know why. He did not do any damage to the truck because it has a cattle catcher covering the grill but the gate was a bit whopper-jawed! Steve and I were able to get it bent back so that it will completely close! At least he was not on the road when the brakes failed!
Have a vehicle, it will fail!

I saw a grasshopper and I caught it all by myself! It kept jumping away from me and I kept hopping right after it! After the 4thattempt I caught the little booger! By the time I caught it, it was a little gritty but it was delicious! Mom saw me catch the grasshopper; you would have thought I just discovered the cure for cancer; she was clapping her hands. She was so excited, she said, “Good boy Skeeter, you are such a clever little guy!” Well, duh! Of course I am a clever guy! The other day I caught a moth! It was not as good as the grasshopper and it left a powdery residue on my nose and mouth. I am getting to be quite the hunter!
Mom bought some sort of vegetable today that is called a Ridge Gourd! It is supposed to be edible but if you let it get mature it becomes like a loofa sponge. Mom cooked the thing up; I am not a fan. I might like it better if she did not put all those Indian spices in it! Do I look like I am an Indian? Mom and Dad will have to eat that big pot of stuff all by themselves!
Put the spices back in the freezer where they belong!
Love, Skeeter
