Guess what tomorrow is? NATIONAL TOILET DAY! I am not joking! There are billboards all over Yendi announcing National Toilet Day. Who knew there was a National Toilet Day? The clinic next door to us is sponsoring the National Toilet Day. The signs say the toilets can be flushed or pour to get rid of the waste. Most of the people here do not have toilets. The ones that have toilets have sort of an outhouse type affair with a hole that you squat over. I told Mr. Iddrisu and Nazo that they should go tomorrow and see what they are offering. Some of these organizations will help finance the projects they are pushing.
We did not write Yendi Notes yesterday because the seminar we attended in Tamale at the preachers’ school ran over time and we did not get away in time to make it to Yendi before dark. It was actually dusk by the time we said our “good-byes” and took pictures with everyone that wanted our photo. Most of the men had cell phones and they delight in having pictures of Americans on their phones to show their friends. I can’t say anything about taking pictures either. I tried to take a photo of every aspect of Ghanaian life so when someone wants our picture we always say yes. Since it was so late we decided to spend the night in Tamale and head back to Yendi when we woke up. We were on the road shortly after 6:00.
Mr. Iddrisu and I worked on the books this morning. We will not be here on Thursday so Mr. Iddrisu had to have the money to make payroll.
This afternoon we went to visit the lady who makes the bread for the seminar. We wanted to give her heads up that we would need 400 loaves of bread at the end of the month. She cannot read or write but we left her a note so she would know what days we needed the bread. She asked us to stop by next week and remind her. She is amazing; she makes hundreds of loaves of bread a day and she cooks them all in charcoal ovens. She hires women and young girls to help. She is one of the wealthier women in Yendi.
We have been scurrying around all day marking things off our list. We will leave tomorrow afternoon to make our way down to Accra to pick up Steve Carr and John Colgan. They will arrive on Tuesday morning at 8:00. We are going to fly back to Tamale and do a little sightseeing. Neither of them has been to Ghana.
Take care and keep us in your prayers while we travel.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
