We are safely back in Yendi. Steve drove about ¾ of the way in rain. At times it was very heavy so guess what? We have hundreds of pounds of wet clothes. We opened the apartment and spread them out on every surface that we could find. They are hanging over the doors, from the door knobs, all over the kitchen counters and beds. We even hung four clothes lines in the room. All the ceiling fans are running but it has been raining here too so the humidity is high and it will take a while for them to dry. We only got about half the clothes hung up to dry. We are hoping that this batch will dry over night and we can put out more tomorrow. Now if the sun comes out we will be able to dry them more quickly on the clothes line outside.
While we were at Mr. Gyamfi’s house yesterday picking up the clothes we noticed a cage with cats of various sizes. It is very strange to see cats in a cage here. We looked closer at the cats and noticed they were not very tame. When we asked about the cats we found out that they were raising the cats to eat. Not all tribes in Ghana eat cats and not all eat dogs. Divine told us that cats are very “palatable” and he enjoys them. Timothy said that he does not eat cats but it is a tradition in his tribe that if a non-Christian has twins they sacrifice a cat and the twins and old ladies in the family eat the cat. This ritual is done before the twins are old enough to marry. The belief among the pagans is that if the ritual is not preformed the twins cannot marry without disastrous consequences to the marriage.
Mr. Iddrisu has not found his motorcycle. He is still looking. Today Timothy called him and told him that he needed to talk to the men in the market that make new keys and give them a description of his motorcycle in case the person who stole it decides to have new keys made for it.
When we passed through Tamale we stopped at the drivers’ license office and got a temporary motorcycle license for Divine. He bought a motorcycle a few days ago but does not have a driver’s license. He got a learner’s permit and a booklet about the driving laws. He will go in October to take the test.
Thank you for the prayers and concern. We appreciate all you do for the work.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
