The wind picked up a little today which made the weather a little easier to bear but today’s high still hit 113oF. It was lucky for me because I still had some finishing up to do on the child center door which means I was in the shade. You can imagine how work tends to slow down around here in the mid day due to the temperatures.
Nazo is usually the only worker here on Saturdays but Amama came to make up another of her days off. She worked most of the morning getting the PPP containers ready to be reused. She also brought some hand brooms that I had given her some money so she could buy them for me. These brooms are made from the spine of the palm tree leaves. They make the broom by taking a handful of leaf spines and using a strip of a piece of old cloth or string or whatever they have on hand and tie them together close to the base of the spines. There isn’t a wooden handle tied to it; you just hold it with your hand and bend down to the ground to sweep.
I had gone into town around 9 am to buy a floor mop for Amama to use on the cement floors in the house. I couldn’t believe there was not one seller that I know with their shop open for business so I had to go back empty handed. Nazo went to the hardware store to purchase some turpentine for me. After I finished the door I needed to paint the area I worked on so it doesn’t look like a rank amateur did it.
It wasn’t long after lunch that Nazo rang the doorbell. I think he had telephoned one of his friends that we needed a wet mop and long ceiling brush so here was a vendor on my veranda. I actually was glad he came so I didn’t have to go to town to buy them. I ended up buying three items from him after he was willing to reduce the price of the third broom. I’m sure I made his day.
Later in the afternoon I sat down to work on a tract for several hours that we had started to put together last year. It is a little ready reference that we can keep in our bibles of questions that come up during question and answering periods when visiting the congregations. I still like the Paul Sain ready reference booklet that some of you might have but it can be bulky in your bible when you’re in the bush.
I also double checked the old pickup to get it ready to travel in the morning to the village. I enjoy getting to visit with the individual congregations on these days.
A few words for the married gentlemen who might be reading today’s Notes. Please be reminded that February 14th is this coming Tuesday so please don’t forget that lady that you have been married to for a short or long time (40 years as is my case). The writer of Proverbs 31:10 hit the nail on the head when he said “A worthy woman who can find? For her price is far above rubies.”
I hope you have a great day and may God bless!
In His service,
Stephen Taylor
