Steve started working on the annual report for the Child Center this afternoon. He usually writes the physical report and I count charts and cards to see how many children we have seen this year; he also includes the children we helped that have special needs. He also includes things like the number of twins, mentally ill mothers and adults that the Center has helped during its physical year. The report is not actually due until the end of November but it has to be submitted a month before it expires. At least this year we do not have to do a police report and they are letting us pay for the certificate renewal at the bank of our choice. Last time we were in Tamale Steve stopped by the Social Welfare office to make sure there had not been any changes; we would hate to be caught unawares!

Red stopped by first thing this morning; he brought the grates that we will be using when we put the wall back up. They looked great; the grates looked great! Sounds funny, doesn’t it? We hired a motor king to bring the grates to the mission house so while the motor king was here, we hired him to carry the old gates back to Red’s house. He will either use them for another project or he will sell them for scrap. We were happy to have them off of the property!

Later in the morning, we brought the trash out and let Donkey go through it. Donkey’s kids gather scrap metal and sell it so they will have money for school. School is supposed to be free but nothing is really free; they still have to pay for their books, uniforms, desk and several other things. We also gave him the old “T”s that were in the wall to hold up the razor wire. Donkey was happy to get the scrap. He also took all the plastic bottles and other types of plastic; if they do not use the bottles for drinking water his wife will use them as kindling to start their fires. It is difficult to get a wood fire started especially during the rainy season. The things that he did not take we will take to the dump. We burn everything that will burn so the only things that were left were broken glass and spent light bulbs. Recycling at its best!

The big mango tree is not supposed to be producing mangos at this time of the year; it usually produces towards the end of the dry season. The mangos are not good enough to eat; most of them have bugs so the mangos are laying around all over the ground. Donkey has not raked under the mango tree in the past 3 or 4 days and I was tired of stepping on mangos so this morning I told him to stop raking the backyard and come to the front. He said he wanted to finish the back first. I do not think that he knew how much raking there was to do in the front yard but he stuck with it and it looks much better now.

Take care and have a great weekend!

The Monkeyshines

Mom has been at it again! Yesterday, Dad bought a couple big packages of these red beef hotdogs; they were frozen. The hotdogs are very odd! They have more cereal in them than they have beef! They are dyed bright red and when they are boiled the water turns red too! I personally do not eat them because of all that red food dye! I am sure that it would make me hyper if I ate it! Well, anyway, Dad forgot and left the hotdogs sitting out all night; Mom found them this morning. Dad told her just to throw them out! Mom hates to waste anything so she said that they were still cool and she was going to go ahead and cook them to see how they tasted! She cooked those poor hotdogs for hours; I mean hours; she put them on to boil at 8:00 this morning and she finally turned them off at 3:00. She said that she was going to make sure there was nothing left in there that could make anyone sick! Well, it won’t make me sick because I am not going to eat them! At lunchtime she cut off a part of one of them and ate it to see if she could feel any ill effects from eating it! I agree with Dad, “Let it go!” She thought that they would eat the hotdogs for supper but then she decided that perhaps she needed to cook them a little longer so she fired up the grease; cut each of the hotdogs in half and deep fried them until they were crispy on the outside! Who ever heard of deep frying a hotdog! Mom said that nothing can live in hot grease! While she was frying them, she decided to eat a whole one just to be sure they were safe to eat. Mom said she was not going to feed them to Dad until she saw how she felt in the morning!

Tuna salad is on the menu for supper tonight!
