The grandmother of Rayan, the Cerebral Palsy baby brought him to the Center this morning. Rayan’s grandmother has a large shop (by Ghanaian standards) in Yendi market. Over the years we have bought many things from her, especially when it is time to buy food for the seminar. We stopped in at her shop last Monday and she explained that she was Rayan’s grandmother and that she was very worried about him. He is the child that the mother took to Tamale for a scan and then brought the memory card back to Yendi to be read. The doctor made a copy of the report but did not tell them what was wrong with the child. Anyway, when we saw them in the market, we told them to come to the Center and Steve would go over the report with them. Steve pulled up a couple photos on his cell phone so the grandmother could see what he was talking about. We showed the grandmother some exercises to help strengthen his neck, back and legs. Rayan is so pleasant but he knows what he likes and what he does not like and does not mind letting you know it! He is getting close to 2 years; he is eating well and his weight is good. The grandmother babysits for him at her shop several days a week; his mother is going to nurses’ school.

Today was the day to pay the monthly taxes; Steve got them filed on the computer and then sent Mr. Iddrisu to the bank to pay them. Steve wrote a check for one set of the taxes! Please! Hardly anyone in Yendi uses a check for anything. The check was dated for yesterday and there was some discussion at the bank as to whether or not they would be able to accept the check because it did not have today’s date on it! It seems like they just hunt for a reason to reject the checks! It is not like they even credit our account until they have sent the check in and it has cleared. They finally accepted the check and told Mr. Iddrisu that they would call him when it cleared. It is just exhausting!

Steve got all the receipts for March entered into the computer today! I am so happy that he took over doing that job!

The lady that sells the fabric seconds called Zorash and said she had gotten another shipment of fabric and wanted us to come see it. Today, Zorash found a piece she liked and I found a few that I liked.

Amama cleaned out the garbage cans that hold plastic and metal scraps. She likes to get them because she gives them to her children who in turn sell them to the scrap man to get a little pocket money. We burn all the paper scraps and the other is recycled so we produce very little waste! Our carbon footprint is little because we live in a land that can recycle almost anything! Ha!

Enjoy your day!

P.S. Our friend Don is having surgery tomorrow and we know that he would appreciate your prayers!

The Monkeyshines

I am in serious trouble! You know sometimes I am in a little trouble, sometimes I am in trouble and then there are times when I am in SERIOUS trouble. Well, I am in serious trouble and this time there is nothing Mom can do to get me out of trouble. Dad left the TV controller where I could reach it if I ran to the end of my leash jumped straight out and stretched as out the full length of my body sort of sideways with one arm stretched out further than the other one. No one knew that I had the controller. Those little blue and red rubber buttons on the controller were looking so pretty that I pulled them off / out of the controller and hid them in my cheek pouches. When Dad saw me, he raised his voice and called me a “little snot”! That hurt my feeling! To add insult to injury I refused to take them out of my mouth so the parents wrapped me in a blanket like I was in a strait jacket and Mom proceeded to force them out of my mouth. They only recovered the 2 blue ones; no one is sure where the red one went; Dad thinks that I swallowed it in all the commotion! I carry things around in my cheeks all the time that are not food and I don’t swallow them. I know the difference between food and a piece of plastic, unlike some dogs I have known! Dogs are not very smart; I have seen dogs eat plastic, paper and string! What are they thinking? Surely, they are not that hungry!

I wonder how long it will take Dad to forget that I pulled the button off his controller?

Maybe never because every time he looks at it, he will notice the red button is still gone!

I’M TOAST!

Love, Skeeter
