Dauda, the mason, was our first visitor today. He was here before 7:00. He came on his way to the jobsite where he is presently constructing a room and a wall. Dauda lives very near the mission house. He lives behind the property near Donkey. We talked a lot about the wall and we agreed on part of the pricing; he is not sure how much to charge for setting the grates in the wall and casing a lintel on top of the grates. We are going to meet him in the morning at the jobsite with one of the grates so he can see what is going to be involved in setting them. He said that he should finish the job he is working on in 3 days and then he will be ready to start work on the wall repair.

When we went for our walk this morning, we walked down the road to the back of the property so we could see if the weeds Donkey sprayed yesterday were dying. While we were looking around, we noticed that someone had nailed a large metal framed sign board to the outside of the wall! The sign was advertising a business that sells herbal medicine that is supposed to cure everything from cancer to hemorrhoids to infertility problems to liver, spleen and kidney problems to arthritis and chest problems. Please! How can herbal medicine cure all these things? Many of these herbal medicines come out of China and we now have a big Chinese population in Ghana. We were not happy that someone had put up a sign so we came back to the mission house and asked Mr. Iddrisu and Donkey if they had given anyone permission to hang the signboard. Donkey had seen the sign board but had no idea who put it their; neither did Mr. Iddrisu. Steve got the crowbars and hammer and we drove down to the back of the property to remove the sign. Donkey went with us. Once the sign was removed, we called the number that was on the sign. The man who put up the sign came to the wall and Steve asked him where he wanted us to carry the sign because it could not continue to hang on the wall. The man put up no resistance and gave no excuse; he knew it was out of bounds for him to hang something on someone else’s property. He led us to his house where he was selling herbal medicine and we left the sign with him. He lives very close to Donkey. Later in the afternoon Steve went to town and bought spray paint and put up no posting of bills on the walls around the compound. This should deter others from hanging signs and posters on the wall.

Meri did not come to work today; she did not call or let the other workers know why she did not come to work. I told Zorash that she was probably up all night with her rival’s new baby. It is also the job of the rivals to take care and bathe each other’s children.

Thank you for all your help.

The Monkeyshines

Mom decided that I needed a nap this afternoon which really means she needed a nap! I never think I need a nap! Dad was working on his lesson on the computer. Mom decided that she would give me the mirror to keep me quiet while she dozed. I worked for a little while; I still love looking at myself but Mom laying there with her eyes closed was too much to resist! I soon started dragging my toys up and fighting with them; it was not my fault that the toys jumped all over her! I knocked all the toys out of both of my toy baskets and I sat on her head and groomed her hair! She finally gave up on the nap and started working on the receipts.

This is where the real fun began! She gave me a couple of empty receipt booklets! After the receipts are torn out the booklet is left with the tabs at the top of the booklet and the cardboard and carbon paper are still attached. It took me a while to pull out all the little bits of paper; I even figured out how to pull out the staples! I am a smart little guy! You should have seen all the little bits of paper flying all over the bed and the floor; it was a glorious sight! The air conditioner fan is set to oscillate; so, when the fan oscillated down to the floor the bits of paper flew all around! It was a great time had by all! While I was destroying the receipt books Dad was outside; you should have seen his face when he walked into the mess of all messes!

Never put the vacuum cleaner away!

Love, Skeeter
