We arrived in Accra around noon today. We thought that we were going to spend the afternoon looking for a new van but alas today is a holiday! We decided to change money; go to one of the big grocery stores and see what they had before we ate an early lunch. Well, the grocery store would not let anyone in that has a backpack or a large purse because they are trying to cut down on shoplifting. There was no way that we were going to leave our backpack with our passports and money with some stranger at the check-in counter! How dumb does that sound? So, we did not get to go in the store. We went on to the restaurant. We were planning on going to a small restaurant that has been run by Lebanese for years but when we got to the restaurant new owners had taken over. We had our taste buds witted for Mediterranean food and were offered mostly Ghanaian food. So disappointing! We went around the corner and tried a Chinese take away restaurant instead. The food was very good and for once they put enough hot red pepper in it to satisfy my taste buds!
While we were eating, we decided to call my brother Paul and see if he had taken off yet. Steve was watching his plane on “FlightAware” and noticed it moved a little bit but never took off. A little while later Paul called and said that they were sitting on the plane. Steve checked the internet and found out there was a storm they were trying to reroute around but that should not have been such a big problem but later Paul called again and said that the radar was down; a work crew had accidently cut the cable that controlled the radar and over 600 flights had been grounded and that the outage affected several airports including JFK where Paul was flying into. Paul was still in Columbus, Ohio sitting on the plane. He is not sure if he will fly tonight or not. One report we read said that the crews were actively working on the problem and that they were in the process of splicing the cables back together. That sounded promising. Paul said he might be delayed so long that he misses his flight to Ghana from JFK but if no planes are flying out of JFK there is a chance the flight to Ghana will not fly on time either. We will have to wait and see what happens next!
