Today was a big disappointment for Jack and me! Not so much for Steve and Red because they did not want to hunt for hippos anyway. We were driving around on dirt roads that none of us had ever been on before. We were looking for a hippo sanctuary. We had a map but none of the roads have names. We stopped along the way and asked several people if we were on the right road; they assured us we were. After we had traveled for miles and miles without seeing anyone Red said that he never wanted to travel these roads at night. We finally found the hippo sanctuary only to find out that we could not see hippos at this time of the year because the river was flooded and the hippos were miles away. We were disappointed that we had come all this way for nothing. Well, I did buy a basket and a couple clay pots at the gift shop so it was not a totally wasted trip!
We made it to Wa around 2:00 this afternoon and had just got checked into our hotel when the rain hit. We knew as soon as we heard the thunder that the electricity would go off. Sure enough it did; this hotel does not have a generator. It rained most of the rest of the afternoon. I guess it was a good thing we were not out on the river in a canoe looking for hippos. We will spend a couple nights in Wa before we head back to Tamale.
There is a little restaurant at the hotel so we had a nice supper. The meals have to be preordered in case they need to run into town to buy supplies. Obviously the cooks have a gas stove because our supper was served on time.
We did not realize when we got the rooms that the one Red and Jack are staying in does not have an air conditioner. We checked on another room but it only has a double bed instead of 2 single beds. Red is not used to having air conditioning and Jack said that he did not mind one way or the other. At least it is cool tonight because of the rain. They are going to see how they get along tonight; they might have to change to another room tomorrow.
Take care and keep praying for us.
In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
