At 6:00 this morning the doorbell rang; we had not even gotten out of bed yet! We thought that it was Dauda, the mason, trying to get an early start before it got too hot but it was Donkey. He had called Steve yesterday and said that he had been up all night Saturday with vomiting and diarrhea and that he had gone to the clinic for treatment! So we were aware that he was sick. He came so early because he did not have the money to pay for his treatment. He still had the IV needle in his arm! It amazes us that the hospitals and clinics will let the people go and come with the IV needles still intact. We have seen people roaming around the market with it in their arm. Maybe the way they get people to pay for their treatment is to refuse to remove the needle until the bill is paid. Donkey was discharged today; Mr. Iddrisu said that he was no longer sick but that his back was still hurting him. The doctor did not give him any pain medicine; he told him to go to Yendi hospital and get an x-ray.

Speaking of Yendi hospital; they now have an oxygen generator! It is a new installation. It has a huge red, white, and blue United States flag painted on the side of it. That says, “Gift from the United States”! It was exciting to see! We just wonder how long they will be able to keep it running with this unstable electricity! The hospital used to have to take their bottles to Tamale to get them recharged. Lots of the time they were out of electricity. We are coming up in the world!

The wall reconstruction started in earnest this morning. We lost count of how many trips we had to make to the back field today! Dauda did not want to remove a long slab of cement that was about 10 foot long because it was going to be too much work and he thought that he was going to set the grates on top of it. Please! I told him all it would do was make a dam and keep the water from passing through the grates because it was taller than the field. I talked and talked to him; he does not like to listen to me too much because I am a woman. Finally, Steve walked over and said, “Yes, Dauda, I have to agree with Sister Kandie; that cement has to be removed.” Dauda immediately agreed and said that he could not do that hard work himself but he would find some men to do it! What! The whole thing is so annoying! Within a few minutes the men had their pick axes and were destroying the slab! The mason’s got the grates set and 5-courses of a small section of the wall built back. We were pleased with the progress they made today!

Meri and Amama did not come to work today; today was the naming ceremony for her rival’s new baby and she had to cook and greet guests and Amama was still attending her sister’s wedding in Accra. They are both supposed to be back at work tomorrow. Poor Zorash had the Child Center by herself today because we were working on the wall project.

Take care and enjoy your day!

The Monkeyshines

I had to spend far too much time in my condo by myself this morning! I was beginning to feel like that pitiful little monkey at our neighbor’s house that no one loves! Mom and Dad were running around like crazy people! They were throwing tools in the truck, loading and unloading stuff; you know I could have helped them if I was not stuck in my condo! The best part of the morning was that Mom mixed my bottle with grape juice once, and another time she put my vitamins in my bottle! Wow! The grape juice bottle was wonderful but I will take the vitamin laced bottle every day of the week! I love my liquid vitamins; this is the first time that she fixed a bottle like that; it was amazing! I drank the whole bottle and did not even come up for air!

The afternoon was good; we took a little nap! I mostly played with my mirror! I have not been able to break it since Mom put that Gorilla tape around the outside edge! Mom is happy about that but I have not given up on it yet! I think that if I could get that black tape pulled off, I could still break it! Mom went out of the room for just a few minutes and when she came back, I had dumped Dad’s pitcher of ice tea on the floor. Dad only thought he pushed it out of my reach! That tea went everywhere! Did you know that if you bite tea bags stuff comes falling out of them?

Lipton Tea is my favorite!
