It rained almost all night! The rain stopped around 6:00 this morning. When we noticed that Donkey had not come to work today Steve called him to see where he was and to see if he was sick. He said that he was not coming to work today; he would pay today back on his next day off. He said that his waist was hurting! When they say they have waist pains it really means their back is hurting. Donkey has trouble with his back. All that rubble moving probably aggravated it.

The funny thing is that when we went for our walk this morning, we walked to the back of the property to see how the field looked once the rubble was hauled away. The back of the mission property borders Donkey’s house. Guess who we saw out and about this morning? You guessed it! Donkey came riding his bicycle up the road that we were walking down! Surprise! Donkey stopped to tell us that he was on his way to the pharmacy to get more tablets for his waist. Seems to me if you are strong enough to ride a bike you should be well enough to come to work!

A little while ago Steve went down to pump up the water. He came back with bad news; he said the well pump was leaking; not just a few drops of water but lots of water. He said he thinks that it is probably a seal. He decided to go ahead and try to fill the overhead tank before we call Mr. Adams to take a look at it. If he has to pull the pump, we will be without water for a few days. Of course, the cistern is full to overflowing so we have plenty of water right now. We can always haul water; we have done it before and we can do it again but hopefully it will be an easy fix.

This afternoon Shamuna came for a visit. We have known Shamuna since he was 5 years old. Shamuna and his friend were walking home from school and they were struck by a vehicle while they were crossing the road here in Yendi. Shamuna lost his leg mid-thigh and his friend was killed. We helped Shamuna get an artificial leg when he was 5. Over the years he has had several other legs. He is now almost 16 years old and about 6 feet tall. He needs a new leg because his other one is too short. Imagine that! Anyway, thanks to your generous donations for “whatever comes up” we were able to help him get a new prosthesis. He said he will be going away to senior high school and you know how important it is for a teenager to fit in and look as normal as possible. He is going to leave tomorrow to go down to Nsawam to be fitted for his new leg. We outfit our own children with new clothes, backpack and lunch box before they go to school; well, Shamuna’s family is outfitting him with a new leg!

Thank you for all your help; it means so much to us to be able to help the people of Ghana.

The Monkeyshines

Me and Mom are best friends again! Today was a really good day! Only a couple strangers in the yard and no sheep!

I tried to help Dad this morning by warning him that the tools he was using were dangerous. I clicked and chattered as loud as I could but he would not stop! He had a drill and a hammer and a pair of pliers. He was trying to repair one of the church benches from Kulkpeni but it looked to me like he was tearing it apart instead of repairing it. When he started you could tell that it was a bench but by the time he got done it was just a couple of boards laying there. Another reason I know he did not know what he was doing is because at the end of the project he loaded the pieces up in the back of the green truck and took them to the lumber yard to see if a “real” carpenter could fix it.

Mom and Dad decided to add some embellishments to my condo. They took trees about 6-8 inches across that still had the bark on them and put them around the perimeter of my condo. They made 2 layers of trees; Mom said that she wants it to look more like a lodge! She said that if I get bored, I can spend my free time pulling off the bark and looking for bugs. What is it with her and the bugs? Just give me a chicken bone to gnaw on!

Dad also rehung my hammock; I have learned to unclip it from the rope! I am very smart. This time they put a clip on it that has to be unscrewed to get it open; that is going to be more challenging!

Does anyone need a carpenter’s assistant? I work for peanuts!
