At 6:15am we were on the road to Kakum Canopy Walk and Elmina Castle.  We had made arrangements yesterday for a vehicle and driver to take us there today.  This outing today allowed Steve and John a chance see some of the coastal area of the country as well as some of the old history that can be found here.

We went to Kakum first. There is a tame, wild squirrel that sits on the window sill of the reception building that eats groundnuts (peanuts) that are provided by the workers.  It was so strange to see a squirrel allow a person to get 2 feet away from it while it is eating but this one would. The squirrel had its cheeks full of groundnuts.

Kandie and I stayed behind and let Steve and John go up the hill where the canopy walk is located.  The canopy walk is a series of roped hand bridges that are located between some of the large trees in the forest high above the ground. The men were doing a lot of sweating after making the trip back down the hill but they did enjoy it.

The slave castle at Elmina is about 45 minutes away from Kakum.  We like to take our visitors there to see how big the castle is and to tour the huge structure that was initially build by the Portuguese for  trading outpost in West Africa in the 1400’s.  Later possession of the castle changed to the Dutch and then to the British.  During the 1700’s it was converted to a holding place for slaves bound for the Caribbean, Europe, and the New World.

Tomorrow our flight is scheduled to leave Accra at 10:05 pm (5pm Alabama time).  We will be going to Amsterdam and then on to Atlanta.  Lord willing we will be Huntsville Alabama around 5pm Wednesday afternoon. Please pray for our safe arrival.
