One of Mr. Iddrisu’s days off was today but he came to the mission house anyway so he could work on his cassava field. We noticed that he had planted corn in the cassava mounds. The American Indians did something similar; they called it 3 sisters because they planted 3 crops together. I think they were corn and squash but I don’t know for sure what the third one was. Did you know that according to the Old Testament law the people were not to plant 2 different crops in the same field? They were also not allowed to mix 2 different types of cloth to make a garment. Now that we have had our trivia for the day, we can get on with the “Notes”.

We have been eating strange combinations of food for the past couple days. I am trying to clean out the refrigerator so anything goes! At our house we say, “if you go away hungry it is not because there was no food; it was because you were too picky to eat what was available”! We are about to the end of our reserves; tomorrow lunch will be omelets and hash browns. At least we are hungry! We have never been hungry.

Donkey called this morning and asked if he could take the day off because he needed to plant his peanuts. He also farms on the mission property. He said that he wanted to get the peanuts planted while the ground was still wet so they would have a better chance of germinating. These guys plant in the strangest way. The father walks in front of his wife /wives and children. He has a long stick that is about 5 foot long and about 1-1/2 inches in diameter; as he walks, he randomly makes holes in the ground and his wife and children walk behind him trying to find the holes that he made to drop a seed in; they then kick a little dirt over the hole to cover the seed. He walks in a semi-straight line and everyone follows him. Fortunately, the weather was cooler today; we did not get rain last night but someone close to us got rain. There was a lot of cloud cover this morning but we did not get any rain. Donkey will make the day up on his next day off.

We did not hear anything from the lady who is supposed to be getting formula for us. She thought the truck might be here today and if it did not come today maybe tomorrow.

We got everything marked off of our list that we could do today. We will have to start covering up the beds, bookcases and kitchen stuff tomorrow afternoon.

I had a little bit of time to work on my lessons this morning. I made a hard copy of the lessons to work on while we are traveling around. I can see the mistakes better when I have a hard copy than when I am trying to edit on the computer.

Take care and have a good weekend!

The Monkeyshines

The parents added more stuff to my condo today! Today, they added a huge tree branch that was about 12 feet tall; they added an additional side branch and hung a stuffed McCaw parrot to it. They moved one of my waterers (the waterer is one of those bottles that has a tube-like straw with a metal ball in the bottom) so that it was sitting right beside the tree branch; that made it easier for me to reach the waterer.

They also hung a baby toy on the big rope that is strung across the cage and one of the bears from my jail cell. I loved the baby toy until I pulled on it and it started playing music! I jumped 5 feet into the air and dashed to the other side of the cage. I sat there for a long time giving that toy the “stink-eye”. How frightening it is having something start making noise without any warning! It will take me a while to get used to that thing!

Stop scaring me!

Love, Skeeter
