Today is Ghana’s Independence Day so no one came to work. Ghana celebrated 60 years of independence. To commemorate 60 years of independence the Ghana government is issuing new 5 Cedi notes. We are anxious to see what the new money looks like. We have to go to the bank in a couple days to get payroll; hopefully they will have some of the new bills. A 5 Cedi note is worth just a little over 1 dollar.
Even though the Child Center was officially closed today we still had some people come to pick up the formula for the orphans. Babies don’t know that there is a holiday!
Paul, Enoch and Steve went to town and bought some soap, sugar, tea, cream, and bleach to take to the prison. Enoch has worked with the prison system for 25 years. Steve said it was like a family reunion when they got to the prison with the gifts. Enoch met up with several of the men he has worked with in other places in Ghana. The government does not let the officers stay in one place too long. They think that moving them around will keep down corruption. Enoch has been posted in Kumasi and Wa. Presently he is working around the cities of Sekondi-Takoradi. Enoch is actually in charge of the chaplain duties and the infirmary.
This afternoon Paul and I went back to town and bought some rice, fish, tomato paste, bread, and oil so the guys can go and visit the lepers tomorrow. They would have taken the stuff today but since everyone had the day off we did not have anyone to go with them to interpret.
Late this afternoon, the young man Iddrisu, who lost both legs in a motor vehicle accident, stopped by for a visit. He is having a mechanical problem with one of his artificial legs. Steve worked on it for him; he is going to come back tomorrow and bring his spare leg to see if there is any way Steve can combine the 2 to make one useable one. He also wanted to know if we had a job for his wife. We do not have a job for her but there is no harm in asking.
The dam project at Kpamang is finished. I know that Divine is proud to see that job behind them. He called this morning just to let us know they were finished and waiting on the rains to start. We should start getting a few rains by the end of the month.
Keep us in your prayers.
In His Service,
Steve, Kandie, Paul and Enoch
